A Supervisor of Sopore Municipality in North Kashmir who has been allegedly acting as Khilfwarzi Officer in the town has amassed huge wealth by facilitating illegal constructions, locals claimed on Tuesday. Two days back, a large number of people from Sopore Town had assembled in Press Enclave Srinagar demanding action against what they termed the official as ‘corrupt and unaccountable.’ On Tuesday, a delegation from the town yet again emerged in Press Enclave Srinagar accusing authorities of shielding the Supervisor Manzoor Ahmed Lone. “There is not a single area in the town where this Supervisor has not facilitated illegal construction in lieu of bribe that he accepts in huge sums,” said the delegation. They urged upon the authorities to investigate the shoddy dealings of the erring official. “We fail to understand why authorities particularly the Executive Officer Sopore Municipality is silent on this grave issue. If you visit different areas of Sopore including Badambagh, Gullabad Bypass, Bagh-e-Rehmat, Khushal Colony, New Colony, Armpora, Kaboo Mohalla, Jalalabad, Highland Colony, Naseerabad, Faisalabad, Hanfia Colony, Bilal Colony and so on, you will find mushroom of illegal structures,” they said adding that dozens of structures have come up in these areas particularly at Badambagh without any permission. Even Auqaf Committee at Mohalla Teliyan Sopore has been allowed to construct shops illegally without any permission. Despite repeated attempts the official in question did not respond to phone calls. When news agency CNS contacted, Abdul Mateen, the Executive Officer Sopore Municipality requested the complainants to handover the list of illegal construction to him, so that he will probe the matter and initiate action at an earliest.
